For three years, the disciples have abandoned everything to follow Jesus. They have left their occupations, families, homes, and all semblance of a “normal life.” So, as you can imagine, after the crucifixion and resurrection take place, the disciples are soaking up every moment they have with Jesus. In Luke 24:50-51, it says, “When He had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He left them and was taken up into heaven.” In one moment Jesus is there, standing around his disciples and the next He is gone. The man these disciples had dedicated and transformed their lives for just ascends into heaven right before their eyes. I wonder if it was really quiet, the disciples just standing there, looking at each other, maybe one says to the others, “Now what?” Thankfully, Jesus being Jesus, He preemptively prepared the disciples for His departure and gave instruction for living “After Easter.” John 14-17 lays out Jesus’ blueprint for living, not just for the 12, but also for us today. This two week mini-series will come from Jesus’ instructions and will reveal that there is so much more after the initial commitment to surrender to Christ.
