The Work and the Vision

His leather gloves were a little more worn, a few spots burned from where sparks had hit them. He had worn them while he sliced through a wall, cutting a door between two rooms. The goal was to open up the space, to create an easy flow. He had measured and sketched the cuts. Taking the saw to the old dry wall, he cut away the old to make way for the new at Transformation Ministries’ new building.
The vision for the space is one of community, of creating a central place where everyone can gather, where people can move in and out and access all parts of the building easily. The vision is to create a place where Transformation Ministries’ staff, volunteers and students can be together after feeling isolated and alone for so long.
He’d worn his white suit a hundred times before, but this project was different. That morning he’d packed it in his backpack and driven thirty miles to spray insulation for a nonprofit in South Bend. He zipped up his suit and thought about the kids who would be protected by these walls. These walls would provide not only warmth from the bitter Indiana winters and coolness from the hot Indiana summers. They would also provide safety from the harshness of life, from the drama of the high school hallways and the brokenness at home. He thought about the work he’d done at other businesses and realized there was something different about this place.
The vision for the space is one of safety, of creating a place where kids can find belonging and a kind of sanctuary from the difficulties of their lives. Many of Transformation’s students are met with addiction, brokenness and pain when they walk through the doors of their homes. Inside the walls of their home, many find that love is not spoken often. Inside the walls of their home, many find a lack of hope. The vision is for a place of hope, a place of love, a place of belonging inside of the walls of the new ministry center.
He slipped off his work boots when he stepped inside his home. Bending down, he picked up one of them and noticed the thick coat of dirt that covered it. He traced a line on the shoe and wiped the dust off his finger. He’d spent his day constructing and installing wooden doorways and structures of rooms. Working side-by-side with other men and women from his community, he saw Jesus in action. He saw people give up vacation days to help a ministry that was transforming the lives of boys and girls in the area. He saw people help without complaining, eager to jump in whenever and wherever they were needed. At the end of the day, they swept up the debris, sending dust particles into the air, but no one seemed to notice. Even though they stood on dirt and mess, they were on holy ground.
The vision is for discipleship, to help students grow in their relationship with Christ. The vision is for a place to eat a meal together, to talk about the lighter things of life. The vision is for a space to go after the meal to have real talk. This is when they dive into the things that really matter, the things that keep students up at night, the things that bother them, the things they struggle with. The vision is for a place where they can grow and learn together, where they can be transformed together by Jesus.
This is the new ministry center for Transformation Ministries. Week after week, little by little, teams are doing the heavy lifting, the cutting and the hammering and the insulating. Men and women from NMC are working side-by-side with Transformation staff, volunteers and students to remodel a place with immense potential. The vision has been cast. The work is being done. The building will soon be completed. We are so grateful for those who have sacrificed their time to join the team. The work isn’t done yet, and we need you to be involved. Here’s how:
- Join a work team. We need skilled and unskilled volunteers to join us March 18 and March 25 from 8:00 a.m. until mid-afternoon. Please contact Linna Sommers at LinnaSommers@nmc.church or (574)773-7773 for more information and to sign up.
- Pray with us. Pray for this ministry and the people who will one day walk through the doors of this building. Pray for safety as construction teams work diligently to see this work to completion. Pray against the attacks of the enemy. Pray this place would be a space of love, belonging and discipleship.
