PRAY (Day 33) – Ordinary Prayers to an Extraordinary God

James 5:16b-18 “…the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces great results. Elijah was a human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.” NLT
Have you ever felt like your prayers weren’t being answered because you didn’t pray with enough power, faith or the right words? James teaches us about the secret sauce of prayer, and it has nothing to do with us. Ordinary prayers in the hands of an extraordinary God produce powerful results. Two phrases stick out to me in the verse above: 1) “Human as we are” and 2) “prayed earnestly.” In this verse, we’re reminded that it’s not about the size of the prayer to our God but the size of the God in our prayer. Newsflash: there is only one Superman/Superwoman and you’re not him/her. The superheroes of the Bible, like Elijah, were ordinary people like you and me. They prayed consistently and earnestly. They were faithful. Here’s a goal for today: every time someone or something comes to your mind, stop, drop (figuratively if you’re driving) and pray!
Lord, forgive me for the times I think prayer is about me and not about You. Thanks for reminders in Scripture about people who prayed and how You answered those prayers. Remind me today to pray about anything and everything. Thanks in advance for what You’re going to do! Amen.
