Multiplication: Meet the Residents

Multiplication is a core value at NMC. By this we mean that we’re not in the business of hoarding the gospel, of holding onto the discipleship offered through Jesus Christ. We’re intentional about pouring into others, investing in their lives, and loving them with the deep love of Christ. One of the ways we do this is through our Residency Program.

The Residency is a two-year program for college grads to gain hands-on ministry experience and mentoring from those who have been doing ministry for years. We’ve seen the Residency Program empower young leaders and launch them into the places God has called them.

Currently, there are six residents serving the NMC family in multiple capacities. Each play a vital role, and we are grateful for their investment in the kids, students, and adults of NMC.

Chandra Yoder | August 2016-May 2018

Where do you serve at NMC?

I work alongside Deandra Ziegler in KidMin with the 4th and 5th graders.

As you do ministry day after day, what keeps you motivated?

My motivation comes from the kids I work with. I want them to experience the fullness of who God is in their lives. I want them to know and see who they are in Christ, to go deeper in their relationship with the Father, and to experience the joy and love of His presence each and every day.

If you had a day to do whatever you want, what would you do?

Honestly, I would spend it with my family in Oklahoma.

David Andrews | January 2018-December 2019

Where do you serve at NMC?

I serve in two main areas—Adult Ministry and Worship Ministry.

Who is someone who has impacted your life and fueled your passion for ministry over the years?

My father (Bob Andrews) has probably had the most impact in my life. His passion for serving the Lord has challenged me in my own walk. He’s extremely compassionate toward others and refuses to let negativity come out of his mouth. He also values the study of God’s Word and the need to preach from His Word, not our own. He is someone who has a strong knowledge of God’s Word and theology but is also strong in practical, on-the-ground ministry.

What’s one thing on your bucket list and why?

I would love to go backpacking in Europe. It sounds adventurous and exciting!

Grace Smithberger | February 2018- December 2019

Where do you serve at NMC?

I work in the Main Office and do administration and other behind-the-scenes work with quite a few of our ministries.

As you do ministry day after day, what keeps you motivated?

What keeps me motivated is knowing that I am exactly where I am supposed to be for this stage of life. I graduated from Bethel College in December and had quite a few options to pursue after graduation. Although it would have been easier to have only one clear option, having many forced me to rely on God. I had to trust Him to guide my decision, which led me to the Residency Program. God’s given me both the peace and motivation to pursue ministry right where I am, because He brought me here.

If you had a day to do whatever you want, what would you do?

As an extrovert and a people-oriented person, it’s not so much what I do as who I’m with. There’s nothing better than spending time with my family and friends! I enjoy road trips, hiking, playing euchre, camping, singing, deep conversations, cooking, sitting around a fire, playing soccer, and watching Ohio State football. As long as I’m surrounded by people I love, I would spend a day doing any (or all) of those things!

Where do you serve at NMC?

I work in many different roles in KidMin. My specific age groups are nursery, preschool, and kindergarten through third grade.

As you do ministry day after day, what keeps you motivated?

The kids. It is always the kids. I know that what I am doing has purpose, no matter how small the task, because it’s all to show the love of Jesus to these kids. I love to see their contagious smiles every Sunday and Wednesday, and I pray that just a little bit of their joy and child-like faith would rub off on me.

What’s one thing on your bucket list and why?

This may seem kind of silly, but my top bucket list item right now is diving with Humpback whales. I’ve seen some amazing pictures and videos of people swimming with these extravagant animals. To me, they are probably one of the most beautiful, creative, and majestic things that God has given us, and I would love to see just a small fraction of God’s greatness through this experience.

Lindsay Fisher | May 2017- May 2019

Where do you serve at NMC?

I work in Student Ministries. I teach on occasion as well as discipling students and helping with other programmatic elements in High School Ministry. I also do a lot of administrative work with all of Student Ministries.

Who is someone who has impacted your life and fueled your passion for ministry over the years?

Peggy Bearss. She was my small group leader when I was in high school. She is still in my life to this day. In fact we just had lunch. She constantly steers any conversation back to Jesus and makes sure that I am focused on Him and Him alone. She doesn’t stray from the hard conversations and always encourages, motivates, and prays for me. She encourages me the most by how she serves the Lord and brings praise to Him. She lives how Jesus does and reminds me that I can, too.

If you had a day to do whatever you want, what would you do?

In a realistic 24-hour period? I would tell Bryce (my husband) to pack a bag, and we would go to Northern Michigan to hike/camp. In a non-realistic 24 hour period? I would tell Bryce to pack a bag, and we would take a day trip to Europe or New Zealand or anywhere in Asia to explore/hike all of the non-touristy places. In either scenario, we would end the day with a glass of chocolate milk and an episode of The Office.

Sam Olson | July 2016- July 2018

Where do you serve at NMC?

I work in Student Ministries, leading worship for High School Ministry as well as focusing on discipleship, some preaching, and other programmatic elements.

Who is someone who has impacted your life and fueled your passion for ministry over the years?

I was a high school director at a church for a year before I came to NMC, and during that time, Derry Prenkert constantly poured into my life and helped me navigate the areas of ministry where I felt lost. Once a month he would drop everything to Skype with me and answer any questions I had. He’s a large reason why I’m at NMC today, and I’m forever grateful for his impact on my life.

What’s one thing on your bucket list and why?

Skydiving is something both Alexa (my wife) and I would really like to do at some point. Although, I’m terrified of heights and have horrible luck, so things could end badly. At least the journey down would be a thrill!
