So many incredible people serve on Ministry Teams at NMC. This month, we want to share the stories of just a few of them. Thank you to all who serve so faithfully! We are so grateful for all you do.
Have you taken a trip with NMC? Renee Wise may have been your bus driver, transporting you from point A to point B. Not only does Renee serve as a bus driver for NMC, but she also serves with the tech team, photography team and Student Ministries’ photography team. Although she serves in multiple areas, each fits into her passion for working with technology behind the scenes.
Because she drives truck for a living, driving for NMC is a natural fit. She began shuttling people on church trips 20 years ago. Today, she has driven hundreds of people to the airport to catch flights to places like Kenya, India, Honduras and Mexico. These trips to and from the airport have become some of the most meaningful moments for her as people share their stories. Driving bus is a unique way to build relationships, but Renee is thankful for the opportunities it has provided her.
Renee has always loved technology, so working on the tech team also seemed like a natural fit. In her words, running a camera requires the same hand-eye coordination as driving a bus. Over the years she has worked with projection and lighting and eventually switched to video cameras. Her love of photography pushed her to become better at taking pictures, and today, along with the rest of our photography team, she takes incredible pictures that help mark meaningful moments for NMC.
Over and over in the Bible, we see the call to serve one another, and we see this modeled in the life of Jesus. For Renee, she serves because it is an act of obedience to the call of Christ. Joining a Ministry Team is a time commitment, but she found that it’s often the thing that takes her to the next level in her relationship with Christ.
Joslynn grew up at NMC. She loved to watch the worship band lead people into the Lord’s presence week after week and wanted to be part of this team. Today, her love of singing and worship motivates her to serve on the worship team to help lead people into the Lord’s presence in the same church she grew up in.
God always gives us opportunities to use our gifts to advance His kingdom. For Josylnn, she desires to use her gift of singing to do just that. Over the years she battled with insecurities when she compared herself to others. She felt she may not measure up to the other musicians on stage, and she wondered if she was old enough and experienced enough. Yet, as she continually relied on Him, the Lord overcame those insecurities with His truth and promises.
Joslynn has served on the worship team for ten years, and although she loves it, serving is a continual decision of obedience. There have been many excuses that have threatened to get in the way, but the many meaningful experiences that have come while serving remind her why she chooses to be obedient.
She loves the power that comes when the Body of Christ worships together. She has loved to help lead worship during events like Fanning the Flame or our Christmas Eve service. As a large group of believers come together, she has the opportunity to see the Holy Spirit move in the room. It’s in those moments that she’s thankful for the courage to be obedient to the Lord’s prompting in her life.
When she talks with others who are hesitant to jump into a Ministry Team, she challenges them to move past their insecurities and excuses and choose to be obedient to what the Lord has asked them to do. Ten years after joining a Ministry Team, Joslynn is thankful for the courage she had to say yes.
The alarm goes off at 5:30 on Sunday morning. After a busy weekend, it’s difficult to get out of bed, but Rolo Ortiz has been in this routine for years. The night before, he began to shift his focus to Sunday morning and turned in early. By the time he pulls into the church parking lot at 7:00, he’s ready to help lead worship. For years, Rolo has served on multiple Ministry Teams. Today, he plays guitar on the worship team and middle school band.
As a husband, father and business owner, his busy schedule kept him from joining a Ministry Team years ago. He didn’t feel he had the extra time or energy to invest in these things. After being challenged to “take off the bib and put on the apron,” he knew that the Holy Spirit was asking him to make time to serve. It required saying no to a lot of other things, but saying “yes” to serving, meant saying “yes” to the Lord.
Over the years, his role has changed, but his motivation has stayed the same: Be obedient and plant seeds. The most meaningful ministry moments have come when the Lord has allowed him to see growth in those he invested in years ago. Whether it’s a college-age guy who still plays the guitar after he took a preteen guitar workshop with Rolo or a young adult who still uses the Bible Rolo and his wife gave her in middle school, each story reminds Rolo of why he continually chooses to serve. His investment in the lives of others was nothing more than little moments of obedience, but the Lord has multiplied those efforts greatly.
In the end, Rolo knows that although he’s choosing to be obedient, it’s God who’s doing all the work. He just gets to be part of what God is doing in other people’s lives. He considers it a gift to love others by serving them. It makes saying “no” to other things so he can say “yes” to serving on a Ministry Team worth it.
Thank you to all who serve on the tech and worship teams! Whether you sing in the Choir or on the Worship Team or run the sound board, we are grateful for you and for the ways you serve.
