A Note from SOAR

What’s a big theme from your summer in SOAR?

God taught me so much about identity. I not only learned more about who I am and who He has created me to be, but I’ve also begun to learn the importance of seeing myself as God does. I don’t have to do anything to earn His acceptance. I am accepted and deeply loved because I am His. The ministry I do is not who I am, but I need to bring my identity to ministry. I don’t need to compare my identity to others. God has created me uniquely and exactly as I should be, and He has a specific calling for my life that no one else can fill.

To my NMC family,

I’m really sad the summer is almost over! I wish I could’ve met more students, parents, and members of the NMC family! I’m so grateful for those who opened their homes on Sunday afternoons. We had awesome food and a great time, and I was always encouraged after hearing stories of God’s faithfulness. I don’t think people realize and fully appreciate the community we have as a church. I hope others are encouraged to open their homes to others who attend NMC, not just SOAR interns! Get to know your church. People are so worth your time!

Real leadership has been a big theme. This leadership isn’t always the person in front; sometimes the best leaders are the ones who go unrecognized and unthanked because they are in the trenches doing what no one else wants to do. Sometimes being a leader looks like serving others even when it hurts, and those whom you are serving don’t deserve to be served. This is exactly what Jesus did. True leaders serve even when those whom they are serving never recognize it.

To my NMC family,

You mean more to me than I possibly could’ve imagined. You have welcomed me with open arms, and I have been impressed time and time again by the way you love us. So I would like to say thank you to our congregation as a whole because you have indeed been the love of Jesus to our SOAR class.

Why did you decide to apply for SOAR?

I actually came to NMC and didn’t even know what the SOAR program was, believe it or not. When I heard about an internship at my home church I was thrilled to apply and give back to the place that gave so much to me.

To my NMC family,

Thank you NMC family for opening up your homes to the SOAR interns every Sunday. Going to a family lunch after Sunday services led to some of the best moments in SOAR. This church family has had a huge impact on making the SOAR experience worthwhile.

What’s a big theme from your summer in SOAR?

A major theme from this summer was to embrace the uncomfortable. Many times I was given tasks to complete or a message to give that were out of my comfort zone. These tasks pushed and challenged me. Although it was uncomfortable, I’m thankful for the experience. By embracing that discomfort, I grew in so many areas of my life. Another lesson I learned this summer was the importance of spending time alone with God every day. It’s so easy for me to put time with God aside when I’m busy. Having that time set aside every morning gave me a positive attitude and peace after soaking in God’s Word.

To my NMC family,

You have positively impacted and shaped my SOAR experience for sure. One thing I really enjoyed this summer was eating lunch at a family’s house every Sunday. This was such a cool way to get to know and connect with families. Everyone was so hospitable and welcoming. Even though I am not originally from NMC, people I have met and talked to have been so kind and welcoming as if I’ve attended all my life. This has been such a blessing.

Why did you decide to apply for SOAR?

I decided to do SOAR because I was leading worship at my church in Plymouth and really enjoyed it, but I knew I needed to learn more about what it really means to be a worship leader. I wanted to grow in both my music and leading abilities. I also decided to do SOAR in the hopes of getting more clarity on what is next for my life.

To my NMC family,

Thank you, NMC family. Being here and doing SOAR has helped me realize that I have more potential than I thought. I have been stretched and have grown not only in worship leading but also as a person. My heart for ministry and loving people has grown to a new level, and the SOAR experience has taught me to be more confident in myself as well as in others. It has taught me the importance of being intentional with everything I do and in every relationship I encounter. NMC, thank you for welcoming me so well and for making me feel like part of a family. Thank you for being a healthy place to grow and learn. I have enjoyed this summer so much and won’t ever forget it.

What’s a big theme from your summer in SOAR?

This summer has been one of becoming instead of doing. This internship showed me more about my passion to work with kids and where this passion might lead (which may not be in a church). Although this was frustrating for me at first, I can see that, perhaps, God has placed me here this summer not to do but to become—to become better at dealing with conflict and different personalities, to become someone who is more willing to be the helping hand instead of the one in charge, to become a better listening ear, to become a better friend and co-worker, and, most importantly, to become more of the woman God created me to be!

To my NMC family,

I’m so thankful for you. You made me feel so loved and welcomed, and you fed me well this summer. I am amazed at how many of you opened up your homes to us not only on Sundays, but even on weekdays. I wish I had more time to get to know you all even better! You showed my teammates and I the love and hospitality of Jesus, and I am so grateful.

What’s a big theme from your summer in SOAR?

A major theme from the summer has been healing. There are still parts of my past that are shaping and molding who I am, and during my time at NMC, God has healed some of that. It’s still a process, and it hurts a lot some days. But it’s okay to not be okay, because God has got me.

To my NMC family,

Thank you, NMC, for allowing eight college kids to invest in what God is doing at your church, and thank you for investing back into each of us. We all have been pushed and have grown as a result. So thank you for this opportunity to grow and become more mature as a result of SOAR.

What’s a big theme from your summer in SOAR?

A major theme from this summer has been community and unconditional love. I came from a church that individualized each person’s faith. We rarely talked about our faith as a family of believers. Coming into SOAR, I realized how much God wants us to deepen that family. We were not made for isolation and individualistic faith, but a faith that engulfs all relationships and allows us to experience a love that reflects Christ.

To my NMC family,

Your hospitality is beyond this world. The giving nature of everyone at this church blows me away. I love how much people poured into all the SOAR interns. There is definitely an encouragement for the next generation, and this gives me hope for the future. Here at NMC, love isn’t simply a word but an action. Your faith is reflected to those around you, and that is exactly what God has called us to do as His disciples. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you! This summer wouldn’t be the same without the NMC family supporting us SOAR interns 100%!
