The semis began to pull into the NMC parking lot last Friday, but the anticipation for Feed My Starving Children was building months before those trailers were parked outside of the Gym. This event has become a favorite to many in the NMC family and in our community. It’s not just an event for NMCers. It’s for area businesses and schools, nursing homes and clubs, other local churches and anyone who has a desire to serve kids.
This week, NMC has been transformed into a center for meal-packing. Over 6,800 volunteers will pack in 17 shifts over four days, all with the goal of packing 1.8 million meals. That means that over 4,931 kids will be fed for an entire year! We are truly honored and grateful to partner with an organization like Feed My Starving Children.
Since 2010, we have hosted MobilePacks at NMC. Some years we packed over two million meals. Other years, we packed just over one million meals. Every year, we have seen God’s faithfulness by bringing both the volunteers and the financial resources needed to pack each meal. This year is no different. Every shift is abundantly full and the cost of every meal is covered entirely.
Over the years, we have also seen God’s faithfulness in bringing people closer to Himself as they serve others. We’ve heard stories of students who came to pack who were planning to commit suicide in the following days. In one particular case, the student had every detail planned out. Yet, as he packed meals and looked at the pictures of kids who received them, he realized that his life had purpose and meaning. FMSC marked a turning point for him, and he never went through with his plans.
We’ve heard stories of how FMSC brings people into the church for the first time. Some of these people walk in unsure, skeptical, and guarded. Often, they leave full of joy and with a new perception of the local church and of the God we worship. Over the years, we’ve heard story after story of God’s faithfulness as he brings people to FMSC to change the world.
And we’ve heard stories of the kids who receive the meals. When we first began to host MobilePacks in 2010, over 18,000 kids died every day from starvation. In 2015, this number was just over 6,000 kids. Obviously this number is still too high. We deeply desire to live in a world where the number of kids who die every day is zero. Yet, we have seen God’s faithfulness to bring this number down as organizations all over the world seek to eradicate starvation.
This week isn’t about NMC. It’s not even about FMSC or MobilePacks. It’s all about the Lord. It’s about His heart for those He created. It’s about His heart for justice and for the least of these. It’s about bringing glory to Him and following His commands to look out for those who have nothing. This week isn’t about us or the number of meals we can pack at NMC. It’s about the Lord.
On Sunday, we look forward to celebrating all that God has done. We look forward to worshiping Him and thanking Him for His faithfulness. Not only will we be joined by FMSC staff but also representatives from a few of the area food pantries we partner with during LET’S GIVE IT ALL AWAY! Join us as we celebrate and worship the Lord this Sunday!
